Laurie Taylor

An excellent podcast on the topic of craftsmanship. This is my favorite radio program and I listen to it with relish each week. Lots of excellent facts figures and ideas here.

I enjoyed the program and have added the show to my podcast downloads. Found it very interesting from the perspective of an ex-suzuki student. The idea that suzuki makes it easy to intially learn is interesting and accurate, and I completely agree that students need to understand that failure is just part of the learning process, and typically is caused by a lack of practice or effort at whatever task is at hand. However, where I believe suzuki gets it right is in the age-appropriateness of its method. How else can you get a 3 year old to "play" a violin? - And howdy - I really enjoy reading your blog.

Good to hear from you! Yeah, I had reservations about that portion of the program too. His point of view.

I still use some elements of Suzuki method. I think this dude's logocentricty gets the better of him when it comes to his approach to his craft.
In some ways he is perhaps a not quite mature artist in that he is still so heavily invested in and attached to the method he used to get where he is. He is sentimentalizing the road he took rather than seeing that there is more than one path.
If I go on much longer I'm likely to quote 'Stairway to Heaven'...
